Professor K. M. Liew received his BS (Civil Engineering) from Michigan Technological University in 1985, his MEng (Civil Engineering) in 1988 and PhD. (Solid Mechanics) in 1991 both from the National University of Singapore. He joined City University of Hong Kong in 2005 as a Chair Professor at the Department of Building and Construction, and currently the Head of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering since 2011. He was formerly a tenured full professor at Nanyang Technological University before he worked at City University of Hong Kong.
Professor Liew’s research activities encompass structural mechanics, optimization, numerical methods, nano-mechanics and nano-materials, multi-scale modelling, simulation and bioengineering. He serves as member of editorial board for more than two dozen of journals and was invited keynote speakers of major conferences. He has published over 650 articles in various international journals including Proceedings of the Royal Society (London), Physical Review B, Applied Physic Letters, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Acta Materialia, International Journal of Solids and Structures, etc.; he is a Fellow of the HKIE (Hong Kong, China), ASME (USA), IMechE (UK) and IE (Singapore); a Chartered Engineer registered under the Engineering Council of UK and Registered Professional Engineer under the HKIE. To date, Professor Liew has attracted over US$35 million research and development funds from government funding agencies, industries and higher education institutions.
Professor Liew is an experienced researcher with an h-index of 56 (ISI) or 68 (Google Scholar). His publications have been cited over 20,000 times since 1991. He is listed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as a highly cited researcher in engineering.
