Biography: Dr. Masaki Mizuguchi is an associate professor in Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University in Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo, and obtained a Ph.D. degree in 2003. After being an assistant professor at Osaka University, he obtained the present position in 2009. His major research fields are magnetic thin films, nano-devices, energy harvesting technology, and spintronics. He has published more than 100 original papers in journals, books and conference proceedings.

Speech Title: Properties of nanocomposite thin films including ferromagnetic nanoparticles
Abstract: A nanocomposite, that is, an assembly of nanometre-scale particles is attracting interest both in terms of fundamental physics and device application. Several novel phenomena have been reported, particularly for ferromagnetic nanoparticles embedded in insulating matrices, including the enhancement of spin-relaxation time and the tuning of magnetic interaction. We have reported the huge positive magnetoresistance effect for nanocomposite thin films including ferromagnetic MnSb nanoparticles. A nanocomposite including Co nanoparticles embedded in amorphous carbon was also fabricated, and strong temperature dependence of tunnel magnetoresistance was reported in terms of microstructures of nanoparticles. In addition, ferromagnetic resonance measurements of Fe nanoparticles epitaxially grown on a MgO layer were carried out using a coplanar waveguide to investigate the dynamic behaviors of spins in a magnetic dot assembly. Other studies on exploration of the size effect, spin accumulation, and magnetic domains of ferromagnetic nanoparticles will be also discussed.
